The tibialis anterior runs down the front of the shin. It lifts the foot up toward you (dorsiflexion) and helps support the arch β€” it is what clears your toes as the leg swings through in walking.

It fatigues or aches (that front-of-shin, "shin-splint"-style soreness) when it works hard to control the foot on landing, especially with tight calves pulling the opposite way. Weakness can show up as foot-slap or catching the toes when tired.

It responds to strengthening β€” toe raises and resisted dorsiflexion β€” balanced against calf mobility so the front and back of the lower leg share the work. See the ankle and lower-leg exercises.
