Hip Abductors

Exercises that target the hip abductors, grouped by whether they stretch or strengthen it.

The hip abductors move the thigh out to the side and, more importantly for posture, stabilize the pelvis during single-leg stance. The gluteus medius and minimus lead this group, aided by tensor fasciae latae.

Weak abductors let the pelvis drop and the knee cave inward when you balance on one leg or walk — a common contributor to hip drop (Trendelenburg), knee valgus, and IT-band irritation.

They respond to banded side-steps, side-lying raises, and single-leg control work. See the pelvis and hip exercises and the hip-drop guide.
